NBC suspends bat boy program after tragic death

The National Baseball Congress said Monday that it will not use batboys or batgirls for the remainder of its World Series games in Wichita following the death of Kaiser Carlile.

Carlile, the 9-year-old batboy for the Liberal (Kan.) Bee Jays died Sunday, a day after he was struck by the follow-through swing of a player warming up near the on-deck circle during a game. The boy was wearing a helmet and was immediately treated by home plate umpire Mark Goldfeder, a longtime paramedic, until an ambulance arrived.

"We suspended the program for the rest of the tournament because of the situation that happened this weekend," Jason Ybarra told USA TODAY Sports.
